Combining the descriptive, cinematic storytelling he’s known for, with haunting melodies, urgent beats, and high-energy rockers, WARFIELD is the debut solo project of She Wants Revenge lyricist and singer Justin Warfield. Infused with the spirit of late-70s Post-Punk, 80s LA Deathrock, and classic New Wave, Justin has once again drawn influence from the past and flipped it to create something new in his own inimitable way.
Long before She Wants Revenge exploded onto the scene in 2006, Justin gained critical and mainstream attention with the 1991 Hip-Hop hit, “Season of The Vic”, followed by the 1993 QD3, Prince Paul, and self-produced debut hip-hop album, My Field Trip to Planet 9. Critically acclaimed and considered by some to be the first, “Trip-Hop” release. Justin combined classic rock, New Wave, and Native Tongue influences to make his own fun, dusted, Laurel Canyon version of the genre.
Having collaborated, remixed, and featured on songs ranging from Placebo, Bomb the Bass, Depeche Mode, The Chemical Brothers, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Cornershop, Gary Numan, Childish Gambino, The Crystal Method, and Handsome Boy Modeling School, Justin has also released albums under Dream Club, Forever Never Changes, and the 2011 Hip-Hop mixtape, The Black Hesh Cult.
But unlike past projects which were primarily meant to document a moment in time, WARFIELD is a proper solo project and touring live band. Backed by friends Thomas Froggatt (She Wants Revenge), Spencer Rollins (Holy Vessels, Raw Geronimo), Mr. Pharmacist (Delta 72, Alan Vega, Lydia Lunch, Cat Power, Gossip), and Delano Duran (Sacred Skin), the five-piece has already blazed through Europe and The UK, playing transcendent shows to packed crowds of ravenous young fans eager to soak up the hour-and-a-half long sets of originals, classic covers, and a few She Wants Revenge songs for good measure.
The origins of the project started in 2024 while writing songs for what would be his new solo project, and after Justin approached Cleopatra Records with the concept of releasing two EPs, a full-length album, a string of singles, and a collection of high-concept music videos all intertwined and existing in a single narrative universe titled, Deathrock Devotionals.
After several lifetimes of music spanning genres, eras, and past lives, the releases so far explore fertile ground Warfield has mined before, but with a more urgent, punky, dark, and youthful energy. Citing influence from Kommunity FK, Siouxsie & The Banshees, early Christian Death, Super Heroines, The Nymphs, Killing Joke, The Damned, and Xmal Deutschland, as well as evergreen favorites The Cult, Johnny Marr, and New Order, WARFIELD embodies the spirit of what’s come before, while pointing a way forward to what could come next.
The debut single, “All The Fun (Kiss, Kiss, Kiss)” was like a declaration of war – a fast, fun, furious trip to an all-ages warehouse party. The follow-up, “Jet Plane” was just that; go-go-go propulsion, engines on blast, and calling to mind the B-52’s and The Pretenders, albeit with Justin’s signature cadence and tone. The remainder of the Deathrock Devotionals Vol I EP were all first-listen earworms, thick with the smell of clove cigarettes, fog machines, and late nights filled with questionable decisions.
“Fades”, the first single from the second EP, (Deathrock Devotionals Vol. II), slowed things down, turned up the haze, and took us deeper into the night. “Only Shadows”, the follow-up is like your favorite song from a Goth mixtape you long ago wore out – a reinterpretation of a vampire love story, but bursting with a dark-pop chorus.
With the next release, “No Party”, Warfield gave us an ode to Los Angeles past and future, where the neon sign of The Hong Kong Cafe still shines, and we drive downtown alleys via the Repo Man Chevy Malibu. With the rest of the EP, Justin expands on the storytelling and world building of Vol I, but with softer brushstrokes and primary colors.
And as the insanely prolific year draws to a close, the project culminates with the release of Deathrock Devotionals – the debut full-length LP. Combining the songs of Vol I and II, but with added cuts not available elsewhere, the album feels like an instant classic, both familiar, yet somehow new.
And with US tours planned throughout 2026, a triumphant return to Europe and The UK, and some surprise singles on the way, WARFIELD signals an arrival, both as a solo artist with a familiar voice, and of a new age of Deathrock for a generation of young baby bats, and old-school OG’s alike.
